Google Nest Audio with Mac: Stereo Setup & Free App

THE PROBLEM

The speakers work. Your Mac won’t connect.

You’ve set up two Nest Audio speakers as a stereo pair in Google Home. Now you just want to play your Mac’s sound through them. But the pair doesn’t appear in Bluetooth Settings, won’t connect when you select it, or has stopped connecting after working before.

Even with Google saying the speakers are in pairing mode, you’re left wondering: can this actually work with a Mac?

Yes. Your Mac can play through both speakers in stereo.

Check your stereo pair

Already have a stereo pair in Google Home? Skip to step 2.

Otherwise, you’ll need two matching Nest Audio speakers, powered on and set up in Google Home on the same Wi-Fi network. Follow these steps to pair them.

Open Google Home on your phone or tablet and select one of the Nest Audio speakers.
Open Settings → Audio → Stereo pair and choose the second matching speaker.
Follow the prompts to identify the physical left and right speakers.
Give the pair a name you’ll recognize on your Mac.

Allow Bluetooth access if macOS asks.

Connect your Mac

Already connected and hearing sound? Go straight to the sound check.

Speakers already listed in the app?

Select them. The app checks the connection automatically.

Connecting for the first time?

Say “Hey Google, Bluetooth pairing” and wait for Google to confirm.
In the app, choose Pair a New Speaker…. Select your pair, then choose Pair Selected Speaker.

Use Google Home to enable pairing mode

Open your speaker pair in Google Home, then choose Settings → Audio → Paired Bluetooth devices → Enable pairing mode.

Use this menu, not “Default music speaker.”

Once connected, the app opens its sound check. If asked, select your speakers and choose Use These Speakers to send your Mac’s sound to them. Keep your usual microphone selected in Sound → Input.

Speakers stopped connecting?

If your speakers are powered on and nearby but still won’t connect, choose Pair Again… in the app.

In Bluetooth Settings, click the ⓘ information button at the far right of your speaker’s row, then choose Forget This Device. If a Connect button appears when you hover over the row, continue to the information button. Forget only this speaker’s Mac connection.
The app notices when the saved pairing is removed and shows the next step. Say “Hey Google, Bluetooth pairing” again and wait for confirmation.
Choose Open Pairing Window in the app, select your pair, and choose Pair Selected Speaker. The connection and sound-output checks follow automatically.

Keep the Google Home stereo pair together. You do not need to separate the speakers or factory-reset them to follow this repair.

Nothing appears in the app’s search?

Keep both speakers powered on and nearby. Ask Google for Bluetooth pairing again, wait for its confirmation, then choose Search Again. Select your pair when it appears and choose Pair Selected Speaker.

If the app needs Bluetooth access, allow it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth.

Check your sound

In the app, set a comfortable, low volume and choose Start Stereo Test. Listen for left only, right only, then both speakers. Choose Yes, Sound Is Correct if that matches what you heard, or Something’s Wrong for help.

Sound correct? You’re ready to play your usual music and apps. You can close Nest Audio Pairing when you’re finished.

Use this if you’d prefer to check here. If you already checked the sound in the app, you don’t need to run this test too.

Check your left and right speakers

Choose your speakers in System Settings → Sound → Output and start at a low, comfortable volume.

Ready to test.

What you should hear

Left speaker only.
Right speaker only.
Both speakers together.

Sound doesn’t match?

Only one speaker plays: check that both are powered on, Google Home shows a stereo pair, and the Mac’s Balance slider is centered.
Left and right are reversed: check their assignments in Google Home.
Both play during a left-only or right-only test: turn off “Play stereo audio as mono” in System Settings → Accessibility → Audio.

Appendix

How to undo the setup

Restore the sound and speaker settings you used before this setup.

Restore your Mac audio settings. In Sound settings, select your previous speakers and microphone, and restore any volume or sound-effects settings you changed.
Forget the new connection. In the Mac’s Bluetooth settings, disconnect and forget the stereo pair. In Google Home, remove only this Mac from the pair’s paired Bluetooth devices.
Remove the app. Quit it, remove its Bluetooth permission in Privacy & Security if listed, and delete it.
Separate a new stereo pair only if needed. If you created the pair just for this setup, use Google Home’s “Separate stereo pair.” Google says the former right speaker must then be relinked to your Google Account.

Common questions

Will all Mac audio play through the speakers, or just music?

Selecting the speakers as your Mac’s sound output sends normal audio to them. Apps with their own output setting and sound effects may need a separate change. Check your sound output.

Is a Google Home speaker group the same as a stereo pair?

No. A stereo pair gives two matching speakers separate left and right channels. A speaker group plays music across multiple devices. Use a stereo pair for this setup.

What if the speakers appear but won’t connect?

The app can guide you through repairing the saved connection. See the repair steps.

Google confirmed pairing mode. Why can’t I find my speakers?

They may need to enter pairing mode again before the Mac can find them. Try these search tips.

Does a successful connection mean stereo is working?

You’ll still need to listen and confirm that left and right play correctly. Check your sound.

Will sound stay in sync with video or games?

Bluetooth can delay the sound. Try your usual apps before relying on this setup for video calls, games, or music production. See what we’ve tested.

Will it reconnect after the Mac sleeps or restarts?

We haven’t tested this yet. If it doesn’t reconnect, open the app and select your speakers to check the connection. Still won’t connect? See the repair steps.
